Publicado: 09 May 2005 14:14
Born in Pasay City, adjacent to Manila, Philippines in 1961, Ramon and his family moved to Guam in 1970 when he was a small child. A student of the martial arts from an early age, he began his exploration by training in boxing as a youth and experimented by sparring and training with friends of his that studied various karate and grappling styles. Moving to Southern California in 1979, Ramon attended Long Beach State and gained exposure to Shotokan Karate and Judo while he continued his development in boxing.
In 1989 he began training at the IMB (International Martial Arts & Boxing) Academy under Guro Richard Bustillo where he remained until 1998. During that time he became an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department and was exposed to Doce Pares Eskrima. In 1991 he began training with Grandmaster Ciriaco "Cacoy" Canete eventually earning a 6th degree black belt from him in his personal art. He actively sought out training in several arts including Lightning Scientific Arnis under Master Elmer Ybanez. During that time he met Master Yuli Romo along with GM Antonio "Tatang" Ilustrisimo, GM Joe Mena,GM Ben Lema and others while staying in Manila.. In 1994 he went to Cebu, Philippines and began training under Grandmaster Dionisio "Diony" Canete eventually earning a 6th degree black belt in his "Multi-style" system.
While in the Philippines he underwent a great realization about the Filipino Martial Arts and began looking for the roots of the various systems. He also met his future wife Eva Canete. His research in Eskrima led him to Grandmaster Filemon "Momoy" Canete at the Grandmasters’ Seminar in Badian, Cebu. In 1995 Ramon was able to study with him personally shortly before Grandmaster Momoy passed away. He implemented what he learned into his training and teaching. Continuing his training Ramon sought out various leaders amongst the Filipino Martial Arts community in Cebu and trained with the “TeoVel's” and “Atillo” Balintawak groups, in the Original Balintawak style of Sergio Arcel, in the Lapunti system of Ondo Caburnay, VICAR Self-Defense Club of Vicente "Inting" Carin, and in the Maranga family system. He also had an opportunity to see the group of Manong Manuel "Uwit "Jecong display the rare system of Eskrima de Cuerdas de Liborio, "Boring" Heyrosa and Manong Vivencio "Baby" Paez Eskrima coming from his uncle Delfin Lopez, an original Balintawak Club member.
